While online colleges are becoming far more popular than they ever used to be, they certainly have some drawbacks as well. People are drawn to the flexibility that an online college can offer, but yet there are some rather important considerations to think through. People can be quite successful with an online college education, but they need to have the right personality and drive in order to do so. That means that if you are not in this for the long haul and committed above all else, an online college can be a tough match. Here we look at some of the disadvantages of an online college education:

1. Extra Motivation Required: To be successful with an online college education, you need to be a very motivated and driven person. Above that, you need to be able to stay with your assignments even when there are perhaps more flexible deadlines. Extra flexibility to some can be disastrous as some people just don’t have the inner drive to keep up with their studies in this capacity. It’s essential to ensure that you are the right personality type and contain the appropriate level of motivation to be successful with this type of education.
2. Plenty of Distractions: Carving out the time and place in your home to study and get your schoolwork complete can be tough for some. This means that it is absolutely essential that you find a way to keep free of distractions if you want to be successful. Working from home on your studies in this capacity can be a tough match for some as there are far too many distractions to be had. If you can’t tune out the phone, the kids, or housework, then this can work as a serious disadvantage towards an online education.
3. Communication: Some people need to have a constant line of communication with their fellow students and teachers alike. To some, working through an online education can feel isolated and mean a delay in or elimination or communication that is essential for their success. If you rely on regular communication or don’t want to have to wait to hear back on something, then an online education can be very difficult to manage.
4. No Access to College Living: For many people, the college experience has so much to do with the traditional college life. Having access to extracurricular activities, clubs and associations, and even study groups makes the traditional college experience much more complete. If you are somebody that wants to experience all that college has to offer, then an online college education may not be a great match at all.
5. Reputation: Though it is changing over, the notion that an online college education is not as reputable as a more traditional one may mean that you are not as competitive as their counterpart that attending a major university. This can work as a disadvantage when it comes time to compete for an internship or a job until the school of thought changes completely on this reputation.
